If you like cheese fondue and French onion soup- you will love this! Its a cross between those flavors and makes a yummy dinner. This is mine and my husband's favorite comfort food dinner!
Butter for the pan
½ - ¾ of a baguette, cut into 2” slices
½ small yellow onion, sliced paper thin
¼ lb thinly sliced cooked ham from deli
¾ cup white wine
½ tsp black pepper
1 ½ cups (6oz) shredded Gruyere cheese
Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Place the bread in a buttered oven proof skillet or a 9” baking dish or casserole.
Scatter the onion and ham over the bread.(I usually wedge the ham between the slices of bread). Pour the wine over the and ham, and sprinkle on top the Gruyere and pepper.
Bake until the cheese has melted and begun to brown at the edges, about 20 mins.
Eat as a meal or side dish.
